How to Create Your Very Own Outdoor Oasis

Backyard feeling like it’s more for your kids and pets, than yourself? Follow these tips to reclaim it and create that cozy outdoor retreat you’ve been dreaming of! Whether you’re looking to relax, entertain or extend your current indoor living space during the summer months - it can all be accomplished within a reasonable budget!

#1 Landscaping

Good landscaping goes a long way! It doesn’t always require a large budget, a ton of maintenance or emptying your pockets to hire a professional. It can be achieved by tossing down some patio stones, fresh sod or seed, and pulling out those pesky weeds. Trees, shrubs and flowers help to create interest in your garden, as they come in all different shapes, styles and colours. The best way to incorporate colour into your garden is by adding flowers, they do require maintenance so opt for annual flowers if that’s not your thing, as they require less work than perennials. Don’t have a green thumb, but are looking to add a touch of low maintenance flair? A rock garden with fresh mulch can take that weedy, overgrown garden up a notch!

#2 Comfortable Seating Area

Comfortable living doesn’t have to be restricted to indoors! Add function to your outdoor space, by extending your current living area outside in the warmer months. Outdoor furniture can get pricey if you’re on a budget, but it doesn’t have to be. Search for those clearance deals, or hold-off and purchase on the off seasons - therefore you won’t have to sacrifice comfort and quality. Create a cozy conversation area by adding a cushioned sectional, chairs and a coffee table. Anchor it with an outdoor rug, and spice it up with some pillows, blankets and decorative pieces. If you have some extra space, an outdoor dinning area is a perfect place for entertaining on those beautiful summer days!

#3 Privacy

Feel like you’re always hanging out with your neighbours when you’re in your yard? It doesn’t have to be that way! Box wood hedges, privacy panels, espaliers or a gazebo with curtains can easily do the trick. Creating privacy will add that extra element of comfort, and is much more pleasant to look at than a fence, brick wall or whatever your neighbour’s got going on out there!

#4 Lighting

Lighting is an important element for creating ambiance and setting the mood! Good lighting can make your outdoor space come alive at night so no need to restrict your yard to daytime use. First, make sure you have a good strong source of primary wall lighting, then add some string lights, or patio lanterns. If you’re looking to add that extra “wow” factor, add solar mood lighting such as garden, pathway or deck lighting.

#5 Designated Grill Space

Does your BBQ look and feel disconnected from everything else? When you give each space a function, overall it will feel more comfortable and connected. Try placing the grill area in relation to where you would typically sit down to eat and avoid placing it far from your back entrance. If you happen to have a gazebo, consider utilizing that space for grilling on rainy days. Creating a luxury grilling station can be done by adding extra counter space, cabinets, a sink and a mini fridge, although it can get rather pricey. If you’re handy or know of somebody willing to help out for a few beers and a burger, this is certainly something you could create on your own.

#6 Entertainment

Do you like to host? Are you looking for features to make your yard irresistible? Here are just a few tips to help you accomplish just that and keep all your guests coming back! Fire pits are a great way to create entertainment in a sitting area and provide warmth on those chilly summer nights. You can easily designate an area, or replace it with your coffee table. Outdoor TV’s are another great form of entertainment and a way to add some purpose to your outdoor living space. Why go inside to catch the game when you can go outside! Lastly, another great option is a bar! It can be as simple as a wet bar, or a full designated entertainment area with bar stools. Have a shed you don’t use? Consider transforming that space into your own bar! This trick is becoming increasingly more popular!

#7 Water Features

Do you live in a busy community and feel like you can never escape the loud noises? A water feature might just be for you! There’s a variety of options for whatever your budget may be; whether its a pond, a waterfall, water-wall, fountain or pool feature. You can be sure to feel relaxed by the calming sound and visual of flowing water.

Follow these tips to transform your backyard into a dreamy outdoor oasis!
